At a meeting of the "London Dialectical Society," held on the sixth of January, 1869, it was resolved, "That the council be requested to appoint a committee in conformity with the by-law, seven to investigate the phenomena alleged to be spiritual manifestations, and to report thereon." The committee consisted of twenty-eight of its members. Professor Huxley and other scientific gentlemen were invited to meet with them. At a subsequent meeting, eight other learned gentlemen were added to the committee. This committee appointed six experimental sub-committees. The following is a synopsis of the report of the original committee. They held fifteen meetings, and received evidence from thirty-three persons, who described phenomena which, they stated, had occurred within their own personal experience. They received written statements from thirty-one persons. They invited the attendance, and requested the co-operation and advice of scientific men, who had publicly expressed opinions favorable or REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE. 237 adverse to the genuineness of the phenomena; "As it appeared to your committee to be of the greatest importance that they should investigate the phenomena in question by personal experiment and test, they resolved themselves into subcommittees as the best means of doing so.
