The Rangers were the first NHL franchise in the United States to win the Stanley Cup, which they have done four times (most recently in 1993-94). George Lewis "Tex" Rickard, president of Madison Square Garden, was awarded an NHL franchise for 1926-27 season to compete with the now-defunct New York Americans, which had begun play at the Garden the previous season.
