It was founded on October 11, 1898, shortly after news that the Treaty of Paris would be signed, ending the Spanish-American War and transferring the Philippines from Spanish to American sovereignty. It presently bills itself as the fourth-largest newspaper in the Philippines in terms of circulation, beating the Manila Standard Today but still behind the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Manila Bulletin and the Philippine Star. The current publisher and editor-in-chief is Fred de la Rosa. The city was in the midst of an uneasy peace and on the brink of another war when the paper named after it-The Manila Times-first hit the streets on October 11, 1898.
