Bone Morphogenetic Proteins - Biological Characteristics and Role in Reconstructive Surgery (Hardcover)

The discovery of a bone-inducing principle was paradoxically the result of a failed experiment intended to recalcify cortical bone. Using demineralized rabbit and rat bone matrix which was then implanted in muscle pouches, surprised researchers noticed that new cartilege and bone developed on or around the bone matrix surfaces. BMP is the generic name for the proteins extracted from bone matrix and the ability to extract these proteins has obvious research and clinical implications. This book covers research in bone morphogenetic proteins conducted from 1965 through 1995. Chapters range from immune response to regeneration of bone defect and focus on clinical treatment problems. Special reference is given to reconstructive repair, starting with clinical treatment of bone deficiencies. Features: * Covers the research conducted on bone morphogenetic proteins over the past 30 years. * Contains more than 70 illustrations. * Emphasis is placed on reconstructive repair, including clinical treatment of bone deficiencies.
