The Environment and International Relations (Paperback)

The volume takes a long view of the relevance of different theoretical approaches in international relations to the study of global environmental change, rather than the more familiar case-study approach. It provides a survey of the current treatment of environmental issues in international relations. There are chapters on normative theory and the idea of environmental security, and the significant connections between gender and global environmental change. A radical approach is taken to international political ecology and international political economy. A range of key international processes are considered, from the formulation of issues through to the monitoring and implementation of international agreement. There are chapters on: conference diplomacy; the role of international organisation; the role of ideology in negotiations; and the important interaction between trade and environmental issues. A critical treatment of the debate between neo-realism and liberal institutionalism is also included.
