But to what purpose should those Prayers be corrected, which they had already us'd, if they were never to be us'd again? Nay, Mr. Clarkjon himself (u) assures us, that the amending of'em cannot be otherwise interpreted, than in order to future use.. Lengths; and that they were briefer or moreinlargd therein, according as they were dispos'd, and as occasion requir'd. But how does he prove this? Why, it seems, Justin Martyr siies, that the Consecration Prayer was long, and so saies St. Cbrjjbstom too; but St. Gregory Naiattzen saies, that when his Father was very weak and at Death'sdoor, he consecrated the Eucharist with a few words, viz, . as many as he was able to use. Is not this pretty Reasoning? Because a Man that was very weak and at Death's Door, had not strength enough to fay the whole Consecration Prayer, but was fore'd to shorten it; therefore, I'le warrant, the ConsecratfonPrayer was not one well known precompos'd set Form, which the Congregation was aceustom'd to, and throughly acquainted with; but of different lengths, and the Clergy were briefer, or more inlarg'd therein, according as they were dispos'd ff iz. in theirafrections) and as Occasion requir'd, I wonder, ourAuthor did not also attempt to prove, that not our Consecration Prayer only (for that is but a small part) but also our whole Liturgy, isnot such a well known precompos'd set Form, as we are aceustom'd to, and throughly acquainted with. For 'tis very possible, that our Author might have heard of some Persons who thro'Laziness, or Sickness, or for some other Reason, have thought fit to shorten it. 6.
