Kal av KdWiov e-7riyivdocrKeis. 2 Ti. i. 18. fieknov crv yivaxrKeis. These two are not necessary instances, but the terms xaWiov and inov may be taken to mean, 'better' than any words can tell. 2 Pe. i. 19. Kal eofiev fiefiaiorepov Tov irpofyrjTiKov X6yov. This should be regarded as an instance only in default of a satisfactory explanation of the strictly Comparative sense of fieflaiorepov. The Superlative irparos is thrice used (John i. 15, 30; xv. 18.) to express no more than priority of time, that is, as a Comparative, but at the same time with a certain stress upon the term. The remark, however, must not be extended to the expression, irpuroroicos irao-r;s Kriorems (Col. i. 15), as it relates not to time but rank, investiture with the dignity of irplOrOTOKta. The Hebraic use of the first Cardinal number for its Ordinal is seen in certain expressions in the New Testament, as also in the Septuagint. Luke xxiv. 1. rfj Be fua T&v crafifiarmv. John xx. 1,19. Acts xx. 7. 1 Cor. xvi. 2. icara filav aafifiarcov. Rev. ix. 12. fj oval rj fiia awfjXdev. The same Cardinal also appears as a mere equivalent of the indefinite.word ns; a transition of use in itself by no means forced or strange, but in this case a pure Aramaism, occurring also in later Hebrew.
