Remember when you wore bell bottoms and wound up cassette tapes with a Bic pen. When ‘The World at War’ was on TV and LM Radio played on the radiogram, and when there were call-up papers in the mailbox and 2c stamps on letters. VW Beetles were everywhere, the Bay City Rollers were it, and the smell of Wintergreen filled the change rooms.
On these pages, hundreds of the little things that made up the world for many in the 70s and 80s come to life in Trevor Romain’s whimsical drawings and laugh-out-loud commentary.

I've been following Trevor Romain's blogs for years. His wonderful stories, often accompanied by his quirky illustrations, are at times hysterically funny and heart- warming and at others, heartbreakingly poignant. He never fails to touch your heart either way. When his series 'Random Kak' started to unfold week by week on Facebook, and I watched his following grow, I knew that something special was in the making. You see, I grew up where Trevor grew up and the little things about our youth that I had long forgotten, were suddenly coming to life before my eyes again. Suddenly there were so many of us relating to, laughing about and communicating our feelings about those interesting times. I had no doubt that these posts had 'book' potential and now that I actually have Trevor's 'Random *** I remember growing up in South Africa' in my hands....I am thrilled. It does not disappoint. I found myself snuggling down with my Koffiehuis and rusks to read and reread, and flipping backwards and forwards through the pages over and over again. As an illustrated journal fan, I love the format too, it's just such fun and so refreshing. Well done Penguin books SA for choosing to publish it. 'Random Kak' is a must have on your shelf....and send it to all your overseas' family and friends too, they'll long for home!
