Great strong personalities that lived thousands of years ago still have their effect upon our present time. The writer whose article appears in this issue has made use of the powerfulness of personality in the "The Story of My Life, By A Normal Box Car." While we always know and appreciate the fact that a box car is not a personality, is not a living entity, still at the same time the author's manner of treatment, by making of the box car a supposed personality, will have the effect of bringing more forcibly to our attention that which a box car undergoes in the course of its life. Too much cannot be said in the way of impressing upon us the importance of the freight car, which is the earning unit in railroading. The revenue of a railroad is derived at so much per ton per mile for freight which is hauled, and while the single car does not earn a very large amount, yet all the cars in the aggregate make for the earning of a tremendous sum of money. In order that the single car with its lading can be moved we have the intricate and ever extending ramifications of our modern transportation systems. Serving the car unit is the locomotive, the train crew, the signalling system, the right of way, the track and the maintenance of it, the terminals, and all the many departments that are connected with this one earning unit. With all that has been said it is not intended to emphasize the car unit above everything else in railroading.
