Energy is an active ingredient for sustainable human development. Efficient governance mechanisms and energy policy frameworks are necessary to support new approaches linking energy to poverty reduction objectives. This study addresses this linkage. It analyzes the relationship between energy services, poverty situations affecting women, and the opportunities for development that arise when efforts are made to provide affordable access to modern energy carriers, such as electricity and clean burning fuels. The study also highlights the important link between sustainable energy approaches and the role of gender in development, especially in the rural areas. Several case studies from Asian and African countries are included.
