Dear Sir: In conformity with the notice sent out by your committee to the effect that the opponents of senate bill 489 would have an opportunity to file, on or before March 12, documentary matter, setting-forth their opposition to the bill, we herewith inclose certain printed matter, which sets forth, from a practical point of view, the objections of the manufacturing-interests we represent, with the request that it be printed and made part of the record. Mr. Chairman, I am in the employ of the Bethlehem Steel Company in the capacity of general superintendent, and have been in their employ off and on for a period of about seventeen years. I am therefore more or less familiar with all the operations as conducted at that plant. We are, as you know, large manufacturers of high grades of iron and steel and of intricate forgings and castings, both m iron and in steel, for the Government or for outside parties, for ordinary merchant work. About one-third of our product is for the Government of the United States; the remaining two-thirds for other governments and for ship and ordinary merchant work and the iron trade generally. We...
