The greater part of the present production is used in the unrefined state. A small company was formerly the only one occupied with the manufacture of sugar, but recently a large joint-stock enterprise has been established in the southern part of Formosa; there is no lack of workmen for the factory, but the scarcity of coal is a very great hindrance. The government is trying to develop the sugar industry by means of bounties. A short time ago, 10 modern presses were brought from America and allotted to the manufactories. The great Japanese factory, which is situated on the railway between Taiman and Takao, produces refined as well as raw sugar. The daily output is 25 tons. CONTENTS. Page.
