This scheme was originally set at a Field Officers' Examination held at Aldershot in March, 1899, under the General and Special Ideas here given. It has now been worked out over again with careful regard to the ground, and to the later conditions of modern warfare. Permission has been accorded to the Author, by the General Officer Commanding at Aldershot, to make use of the original General and Special Ideas of the scheme for purposes of publication. General Idea. An advancing Eastern army meets a hostile advancing Western army. Special Idea. Western Force (Blue). At 10 a.m., at which hour operations will commence, the situation is as follows: --You are in command of the advanced guard of a division (consisting of two battalions, one battery, and one squadron, with a half bearer company). From reports received last night, the enemy's advanced troops have reached the Fox Hills. At 9.30 a.m. you receive the following order: --"odiham, March 27, 19--8.30 a.m. "Advance at once and seize the high ground to the east and north-east of Laffan's Plain. The division will bivouac to-night on Laffan's Plain, and your troops will secure this bivouac from the east. "By order, H.H., "Chief of Staff.' Special Idea. Eastern Force (Red).
