An Outline Of Christian Worship - Its Development And Forms (Paperback)

AN OU F C H R I S T I A N WORSHIP ITS DEVELOPMENT AND FORMS BY WILLIAM D. MAXWELL, B. D., PH. D. MINISTER OF BILLHEAD PARISH, GLASGOW Author of John Knoxs Genevan Service Book OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS LONDON HUMPHREY MILFORD 1936 PATRI OPTIMO PRO PIETATE FILIVS OBSERVANTISSIMVS DEDICAVIT PREFACE book is an attempt to give a concise outline of JL Christian worship and the forms it has taken from earliest times to the present. The aim has been practical, directed towards the clear delineation of basic facts and principles at a time when a quickened interest in worship is manifest throughout all communions of the Church. A large proportion of the space is devoted to the worship of the Reformed Churches, particularly to the early liturgies of these Churches. This has been necessary because of the strange neglect shown towards these liturgies by British scholars, resulting in widespread misunderstanding of a most important period. Public worship as here treated is restricted to the Sunday Morning worship of the Church, and that which has grown out of the Quire Offices. A work such as this, to be of value, requires documenta tion, but it has seemed to me to be of first importance that this should be as unobtrusive as possible. Instead, there fore, of quoting works in the footnotes, numbers are used which refer to the bibliography given at the end, the roman numerals referring to the section and the arabic numerals to the particular work. If a text or compilation is referred to, the roman numeral is replaced by the word Text 3 . The bibliography, though limited in the interests of economy and simplicity, will suffice to direct the reader to the principal liturgical texts and to such standardworks as will, in their turn, open up the literature of the subject in all its branches. My thanks are due in especial to the Reverend W. Napier Bell, M. A., for many wise and helpful suggestions, and for valuable assistance in reading both script and proof also to the Reverend Millar Patrick, D. D., and the Reverend W. M c Millan, Ph. D., D. D., for their advice and criticism, as also to Mr. J. C. Meikle, of the Oxford Press, for his great kindness in compiling the Index. W. D. M. CONTENTS I. PRIMITIVE WORSHIP ORIGINS AND GROWTH i i.
