These four are named as the " Master" and "Wardens" of the Company, in the Charter of Confirmation obtained by them from Queen Elizabeth, dated 26 June, Anno 1, A.d. 1559Although the Charter itself only authorized the appointment of "four Wardens," yet the title of Master, as applied to the chief or senior Warden, by the antient usage of the Company, is here recognized by Queen Elizabeth; and so it was in the subsequent Charter of King James I., but not in the void Charter of King Charles II. That title never having been discontinued, nor interrupted by subsequent acts or elections, even in the time of the last Stuarts, and being commonly attained through previous service as a junior Warden; to avoid Liber Curtes, p. 75. t Ibid. p. 99. % See the entries about his benefactions to the Company, in Liber Curtes, pp. 174-6.
