The scales of iron beaten off by the blacksmith in his work, separated from the dirt by means of a magnet, reduced to powder in a mortar, and washed over: dissolve in acids without disengaging hydrogen gas, and therefore do not occasion flatulence, hence preferable to the filings. 2. JEtliiops Martialis. By keeping iron filings under water, shaking them occasionally (to hasten the process, a few drops of any acid may be added), washing the black powder thus obtained, and drying it as quick as possible to prevent rust. 2. Pompholix. Nihil album. Collected in the smelting furnaces, wherein zinc ores or brass are melted: used in ointments for tutty. Protoxide Of Antimony. Pqwder of Algaroth. Mercurius vitce. Pour butter of antimony into distilled water, wash the precipitate, and dry it by a gentle heat. 2. Digest 1Tb of liver of antimony for a day in three pints of water, to which 1Tb of oil of vitriol and 1ft of common salt has been previously added: decant the clear solution and pour it into hot water, wash the precipitate and dry it. Scheele. 3. Oxidum antimonii nitro-muriaticum. Spirit of salt gxj, spirit of nitre 3J, crude antimony gij, dissolve, pour the clear solution into a gallon of water, and wash the precipitate. P. D. 4. Oxydum antimonii P. L. 1809. Mix in a matrass; spirit of nitre gj, with spirit of salt gxj, add by degrees crude antimony gij, strain the solution and pour it into a gallon of water, in which kali ppm. gij has been previously dissolved: wash and dry the precipitate; process very uncertain, often produces peroxide, gj of spirit of nitre having been directed instead of 3J, as in the preceding. 5.
