The First International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments (Venice, October 10-12, 2001) focused on contaminated sediment in both freshwater and marine systems. There is increasing recognition internationally of the need for a better understanding of the nature of contaminated sediments and wetlands and the risks they pose to human health and the environment. Contaminated sediments can also represent major financial costs because material dredged to maintain and improve waterways must be disposed of properly or treated to remove contamination. The October 2001 Conference was the first in a biennial series of meetings designed to bring together sediments remediation and management professionals from around the world to discuss means of dealing with contaminated sediments.
