Whether Your Grace has ever seen any one of my communications on the same subject I have no means of ascertaining?the only fact in the premises, of which I am cognizant, being that the reply on behalf of Your Grace to any member of the series has been so framed as to metamorphose a critical query into a petition for patronage and protection. But, while I at once admit the propriety of such delegation in matters of form, I must respectfully demur to all and every such substitutions on so vital a point as the correlation of Emmanuel's personality and Emmanuel's church, and that the more emphatically where the issue has to deal not with the linguistic ' scholarship' of any kind or any degree, but of gentlemanlytruth and honour all round. Even at this latest instant, moreover, so strong is my confidence in Your Grace's character and reputation, that I am even eager to believe in any disclaimer from Your Grace of your individual acquaintance with the details.
