The founder of the school of Shafi'iyy was named 'Ebu-'Abdi'llah Muhammed son of 'Idrfs son of 'Abbas son of 'Uthman son of Shdn' son of Sa'ib son of 'Ab(d son of 'AbduYezfd son of Hashim son of Muttalib son of 'Abdu-Menaf. This last, 'Abdu-Menaf, was great-great-grandfather to the prophet Muhammed, and our present Muhammed 'Esh-Shafi'iyy was so surnamed from his ancestor Shaft'. He was further surnamed 'El-Muttalibiyy from his remoter ancestor Muttalib son of'Abdu-Menaf (not, as D'Herbelot says, from the Prophet's grandfather 'Abdu'l-Muttalib son of Hashim son of 'AbduMenaf). His line and the line of the Prophet met in 'AbduMenaf, not in Muttalib, who was not in the Prophet's line, nor in 'Abdu'l-Muttalib, who was not in the line of Shafi'iyy. The tomb of this great legist, 'Esh-Shafi'iyy, is seen in the cemetery of Old Cairo on the Nile. 419. Mansiir, here, is short for Melik Mansiir, Sultan Niiru'd-Din. 420. Many dreams are found related in this history. They are much relied on by Muslims, who divide them, however, into true (sddiq) and untrue, the former really portending some event, the latter being a mere effect of mental disorder. There are many treatises on the interpretation of dreams ('ilmu ta'bfri'r-ru'yd). 421. This Sheykh was Muhammed son of 'Ebii-Bekr, the Hakemite, who is mentioned in Vol. I, p. 94, as " lord of 'Awaja." The jurist may have been his brother, or his son. 422. The Mudhafferiyy sovereignty is the reign of Melik Mudhaffer, Sultan Shemsu'd-Din Yiisuf son of 'Umer son of 'Aliyy son of Resul, second sovereign of the Resiiliyy dynasty.
