Baron Gcelher, you who, in your capacity of Privy Councillor, have undoubtedly done your duty, have probably read the 302nd article of the Danish code of laws. GceL. No, sir.., ._.- Ber. I was apprehensive so. It states, that it is not G merely sufficient that an appointment should be vacant, but that it should be filled by a fit person. Gobl. To whom do you apply this axiom? Ber. To those who are not fit. Goel. You carry it very high, sir. Ber. (Rising, but not changing his tone.) I beg your pardon. Do you go to the Queen's Ball to-morrow? Gcel. (Angrily.) Sir --Ber. Do you dance with her Majesty?--and are the quadrilles of your composition? Gcel. I should like to know the meaning of these taunts? Ber. You accused me of carrying it too high--so I have descended to your level. Chris. (near the window.) Hark it begins again. (Going up Stage.) Gcel. (alarmed, and going up the stage.) Again --it is really insupportable. Chris. Ah I fear all is lost--my father Enter Falkensteid, C. D. Falk. Be not uneasy--those distant shouts have nothing alarming in them. Chris. Is it again over, then? Falk. Not yet; but it is gradually subsiding......
