New York, March 6.--United States District Judge Dayton, of West Virginia, sitting here today, refused to send Mrs. William Hale, of Boston, to jail for smuggling on the ground that he shared the southern opinion that sending a woman to jail was horrible. Mrs. Hale is the head of a Boston millinery firm. She was fined $50. We are truly glad to hear of the change of heart experienced by the Hon. Judee, as we recall the sad experience of Miss Sellens, who suffered this humiliation before the change of heart of the Hon. Judge, and hope the Hon. Judge will not allow the social standing of the gentler sex to interfere with his southern chivalry in dealing out justice to them. We agree with the judge that it is horrible to send a woman to jail, and much more so one that has a great heart full of love and tenderness for the downtrodden and oppressed, such as Miss Sellens displayed at this place in her endeavor to relieve the misery and distress of women and little children at Collier's during the winter of 1914. As we recall the earnest and tireless efforts of this young woman in her desire to help them, we are sorry this southern chivalry could not have developed in the Hon. Judge sooner. TORONTO, ONT. We have now twenty-two bulb shops, three press shops with two shops that started March 13 from Sapulpa, Okla., and also three German system shops.
