I love books about dragons, well Chinese dragons, that is (not the fire-breathing, damsel-chomping Western beasts). Kids stories are particularly interesting because of the illustrations that adorn the fables. Because of that, I was particularly taken with writer/illustrator Ann Howard's new picture book. The watercolor illustrations are highly detailed and beautifully rendered. The cover painting has such depth and personality that you just want to know that dragon better. Several of the paintings occupy two-page spreads and are a real feast for the eye. But, as Walt Disney once said, you must begin with a story; and this cleverly-crafted original tale, that sounds like a centuries-old fable, really draws you in from the very beginning. The mystery and the final solution were both delightful and surprising. I bought some additional copies to give to the young and young at heart in my family. The book is written in English but also features bilingual translation in Chinese. It should be a great 'read to' or 'read along' for kids depending on their age.
