When they originate they make a shoe that is practical as well asnew, that has distinctively novel features that appeal at once to the artistic sense and that show a progressive spirit independent of what others have done. Some of Harding & Todd's original shoes are shown in their business announcement on another page, a glance at which will justify in any retailer's mind the simple, plain title of "the originators" at the head of this note. The very large sale of these shoes for spring delivery makes it possible to say that Harding & Todd have made the styles for 1895. Their turn shoes for the fine trade suit modern tastes and are worn by women who keep up with the advance of thinking, creating shoemakers. Dugan & Hudson are making a special push on their oil Russia shoes, which they are making in four colors, in boys', youths', misses' and children's sizes. Last season they made a practical test of oil Russia which satisfied them of its superiority for colored shoes, and they have, therefore, decided to use it extensively this season. Oil Russia is pliable, yet firm and tough, and will not crack. Its particularly valuable qualities are its beautiful finish and its great durability. The color, besides, is very even, and the leather holds its shade well, even when wet, so that shoes made of it do not become rusty or peel off and have a tattered appearance after a few weeks' use.
