As we near Ann Arbor (by the time-table), lone elms appear in sun-showered autumn fields that dream under a sky of Ravenna blue. There are rambling walls of lavender and violet stones along which reddening berry bushes grow, and graceful thorns. And in many pastures piles of field stones (my favorite landscape furnishing) gleam against the grey-green of sheep and September grass. The Huron appears, with pink-shadowed, open, wooded banks, --the dam, the boat house "Ann Arbor " the train man calls. The boy with the golf sticks and banjo case is under way. 1 make for the door almost feverishly. The first climax is over, and I find myself at last here, and in Bill Clark's waiting car.....Tonight I am in my own little room. There is a gigantic and ugly shadow on the wall. That's I. And the only sounds are my own scratchy pen and the sound of a shower far down the hall. The house is cavernous, and for all the roomers it seems lonesome. There is a still life of fruit and flowers in the hall downstairs. An ornamental chandelier is built into the balustrade at the foot of the stairs. Mrs. Carr. my landlady (from the sound, she wears at least four starched underskirts), is so stout as to render to a layman like myself her every movement mechanically baffling. She inquired if my Mona Lisa sepia print was of a friend of mine. The delirium of the past few days is flagging somewhat. Tomorrow classes begin. Tonight I am aione--and lonely. Bill drove me to my room...
