As we proceed let us keep in mind that education as a result implies a person to be taught, the subject-matter to be studied, the teacher who is to guide and that the educational influence of the teacher while the process of education is going on depends very largely upon the kind of knowledge to be considered and used, upon the teacher's acquaintance with the subject-matter and its kindred branches, and upon the character of the teacher, that is upon what he really is in mind, heart, life and disposition. With all this before us let us ask again what is there in the life, influence and character of Jesus which gives Him an educating power in kind and directions such as all need? Considered negatively, by educating ability and influence are not to be understood the fame and reputation He secured, for these have very little to do with ability to guide and to instruct only in so far as they secure the hearing and attention of the people. While reputation is of great value it is not character, but rather character gives all that is worth having in reputation. Character, so to speak, is within, a part of what one is, while reputation is without. Character is a growth which always requires the element of time, reputation, good or bad, may come from a simple act and within the limits of a week.
