At present it is not possible to further review the new facts relating to goiter, but the conclusions of McCarrison might be mentioned. He believes to have shown that goiter is due to matter in suspension in water; that goiter is not due to the mineral but to the living part of the suspended matter; in other words, to a living organism of the disease; and that the incubation period of experimentally produced goiter is thirteen to fifteen days. Now, in conclusion, I want to make two quotations, and allow them to stand without further comment: Concerning possible carriers of carcinoma in trout Gaylord and Marsh say: "In a disease like carcinoma of the thyroid in the Salmonidae, which is not transmitted directly from individual to individual but which is transmitted, if at all, from the infected to the healthy by some roundabout method, the idea of carriers for the agent which we believe to be the cause of the disease is very natural. Of the recent experimenters with goiter water, Bircher, as a result of filtration experiments, for some time advocated the view_that the agent of goiter was a colloid toxin, probably liberated by some parasite incapable of passing the Berkfeld filter. The residues scraped from such filters produced in young animals very profound nutritional changes comparable to cretinism. The filterable factor which produces the nodular adenomatous form of goiter, as well as the parench_"matous hyperplastic, will not pass through the membrane of a dialyzer, but the residue upon the dialyzer membrane proved to be particularly active.
