The danger of above-line tubes being shot away whilst war vessels are in action cannot be over-estimated, as the stokeholds soon become clogged with ash, and all work is thereby hindered In rough weather, -it is equally easy to work straight ahead with the underline expeller; whereas with forms of above-line ejection the stokeholds are liable to become swamped with water and wet ashes, unless the TYPICAL CROSS SECTION OF STEAMSHIP SHO-'ING OPER: TION OF STONE'S UNDERLINE ASH EXPELLER expulsion of ashes is discontinued. The presence of a large quantity of water in the stokeholds and bilges will frequently cause the raising of the stokehold plates, and men, being unable to find a firm foothold, are liable to fall into the bilges. Bilge and Ballast Emptied--'I' he underline expeller has proved itself to be the most etficient form of bilge and ballast pump yet invented. Dirt and bilge water can be sucked up straight into the discharge without going through any pump; this has proved itself exceptionally advantageous in heavy seas, whenever a quantity of water has accumulated in the bilges. The capacity of the machine_for this service is from 80 to 120 tons per hour. No strainer-box should be fitted, as any object which will pass through a 3-inch pipe can be discharged through the expeller. Increase to Pumping Power of Ship--The steam turbine-driven pump is capable of discharging some 460 tons of water per hour, and it is obvious, therefore, that it is a valuable asset to any vessel.
