Paper bag makers report little let-up In demand, and the outlook is for steady work all summer to supply current orders as well as to try to accumulate stock for fall trade. Produce men are using less burlap this season, first, because burlap Is scarce and high, and, using hampers and crates, they do not need it. It is noticeable that comparatively few barrels are being used this season in which to ship cabbage, lettuce, peppers and other produce--it is going into crates mostly. These crates are made of thin veneer strips tacked onto half Inch ends; are made of "any old thing," and once used seem to be fit for little else than the rubbish heap. Their use, as noted, has knocked out cheap barrels and also has affected bag sales. Burlap having again advanced, local bag makers will only accept orders at higher prices. Therefore consumers order cautiously, asking for small lots for immediate wants, and this is likely to be the program until burlap comes down. The cement mills are unusually busy and are using chiefly rough slack barrel stock and manila paper bags. Demand for flour, salt and chemical bags is reported good; for grain bags, fair.
