Cartulaire de l'Abbaye de Saint-Aubin d'Angers (French, Paperback)

A charter of 972 documents that the abbey of St Aubin in Angers in north-western France was founded by King Childebert I in the sixth century. At the behest of the townspeople, but against his will, Abbot Aubin became bishop of the diocese in 529. He was canonised after his death in 560, and the abbey has been known by his name ever since. In this 1903 work, Bertrand de Broussillon (1841 1915) transcribes and interprets the many charters of the abbey, dating from its foundation period onwards. These charters document both the history of the abbey and that of the region. They also trace the many physical transformations that the abbey experienced through the centuries, and give the names of the people who were associated with it. Volume 1 focuses on the manuscript known as the Charter of St Aubin, dating from around 1175, which comprises 392 documents.
