The Songbird/Volume Three (Paperback)

***** The Cover ***** Peter put his arms around her. "Jeneil....," his voice cracked. Jeneil choked up. "Don't say it, Peter, please. Just I love you, that's all, nothing else. Save everything for our reunion. Please keep remembering our reunion." Tears started and she wiped them away, quickly. He held her to him and she heard him shallow. "I have something for you to take with you. It is important." She said, pulling away gently. "It shows the kind of trust I have in you, so don't let me down." She reached into her robe pocket and pulled out the glass unicorn. "Take it on your quest. When the prince returns it. The princess will keep her promise to marry him." He looked at her sadly. "Oh, baby, this isn't fiction.. This is real. It's zero hour." He took a deep breath to calm his emotions. She nodded. "I know Peter, but I want to be with you so much, giving it to you makes me feel like I'm going with you.. The glass unicorn is my hope for us." She took the unicorn and kissed it gently, then handed it to him. "Now you'll always have my kiss with you, too." He took the unicorn and put his arms around her. "Crazy kid." He said, lovingly. He kissed her on the cheek, turned and walked out the door unable to speak or swallow. She closed the door gently and gave into the tears that fell. Peter stood at the top of the stairs and turned around. Looking at the Camelot sign, he remembered the first time he'd seen it. His throat was in pain. He reached into his jacket and took out the unicorn. "Don't worry," he said, looking at it, "I'll be back to claim the beautiful princess. That's a promise." ***** The Songbird/Volume Three ***** The holiday decorations were put away and life returned to its usual routine. Jeneil said she liked life's pace returning to normal even though she missed all the colors of the season. Peter had tried to settle with his mother, and she was fine if he visited alone which he did the weekend Jeneil went to Nebraska, but he couldn't stand the ice in his mother's voice when Jeneil visited with him. He had nearly been destroyed when Jeneil cried on the drive home from one very short visit. Jeneil couldn't take long visits there and Peter was concerned. He hadn't seen the acceptance from his family his grandfather had mentioned regarding their relationship. His mother saw to it that he never saw the rest of the family and it was obvious to him that she was afraid of Jeneil. Both Peter and his grandfather were at a loss over how to deal with the situation, and Peter was at a loss over a few things that were happening. Once, his cousin Ron had stopped in while Peter and Jeneil were visiting. Ron was planning his wedding and had stopped in to pickup something for his mother. His careful scrutiny of Jeneil had annoyed Peter and with the situation between Jeneil and his mother as it was, Ron's staring caused Jeneil to be twice as upset after they left. But the one person Peter couldn't understand at all was his step-sister Karen. She went out of her way to be nice to him. That reacted negatively to Jeneil too, since Karen was as icy to Jeneil as his mother was. He was beginning to think he shouldn't take Jeneil to visit at all. Visits left her upset for days and it was affecting their relationship. She would become distant and cry a lot, and those days were hell to get through. He was tired of it. There seemed to be only one solution to the whole mess, marriage. It seemed like the best answer. ****** Reviewed by Lisa Cramer "The Songbird is a TRUE novel.
