Not illustrated. 1894 Excerpt: ...New Palaeographical Society held its Annual Meeting on October 26th, when a report was submitted showing that although the Society had given its members twenty-seven plates during the year, thus raising the total number to one hundred, it was( in the enviable position of having a balance to the good of over " 257, or a trifle more than it had expended during the year. It was resolved under these happy circumstances that a case for holding the hundred plates already issued should be presented to members free of charge. The Edinburgh Bibliographical Society, with whom, unfortunately, publication is not necessarily an annual event, has lately circulated a new part of its Proceedings, completing Volume VI. Over forty plates are also nearly in readiness for issue by the Type Facsimile Society. Dr. Oscar Jennings, one of our earliest members, has for many years made a special study of decorative and pictorial initial letters, and has caused facsimiles to be made of many hundreds of them. These will shortly be published by Mr. Methuen, with an introductory essay by Dr. Jennings. Mr. Frowde's new venture The Tudor and Stuart Reprints (5. each), is one which a bibliographical society is bound to welcome very warmly, for it promises to make many rare books accessible in the best possible way. Two of the initial volumes are concerned with national defence, one of them being a reprint of Pepys's " Memoir on the Navy," the other Knyvett's plan for improving the Elizabethan Militia. Howell's " Devises," a volume of Elizabethan minor, but interesting verse represents literature, while Evelyn's "Sculptura" (with a good reproduction of Prince Rupert's mezzotint of the Headsman) stands for art.
