Be not 'controlled in the right and exercise of your private judgment, and be not put ofi' or satisfied with the answer that you are-ignorant, and cannot understand the written word of God. No human authority has power to forbid. J Let me shew you where such a power is used to most (q.) Gen. xlv. 24. (r.) Rom. ix. 4. (0.) l Cor. i. 13. (t.) Acts, v. 29. fatal purposes. I would name to you an awful instance where a malignant delusion is maintained directly and immediately by ignorance--by a solemn and fixed determination not to receive one new idea--by a rejection of all reasoning--by a suppression of all inquiry upon the subject of religion. ' I would lay before you the Mahometan imposture, whose tenets, involving the most palpable impossibilities, and asserted in self-contradictory terms, must stand inviolable to all question or controversy. Not a momentary surmise must insult i the all-sufficiency and sanctity of its unalterable creed ----not a glimpse of light be allowed to enter through any crevice, into the darkened temple of its unhallowed superstition. The delusion rests secure and confident on the absolute ignorance of its victims, the votaries of that faith; is identified with that ignorance, and therefore systematically repels, at all points, the approach of knowledge.
