The 'details of the two cases are as follows: --I.--At HonaVar, a quarrel about some cocoanuts ensued between an old and a young man. The latter in a fit of anger struck the former with a stick, which caused death in about half an hour. The accused was acquitted at the sessions, owing, it is believed, to the fact that the blow was not such as would kill a healthy man. This instance of disposal by the Session Court of culpable homicide is worthy of attention; had the accused been a European and been acquitted, a clamour would probably have been raised by the Vernacular papers. I am far from desiring to extenuate violence by Europeans towards their weaker Native fellow subjects, but desire to see the law applied with unswerving impartiality in all cases, irrespective of the question of birth, race, or colour. II.--The second was a case of a mother striking her child, which died in consequence; the child was unhealthy and not in a fit state to be beaten. The mother was sentenced to 4 months' hard labour. 89-The Returns show only 1 case of dacoity during the year under review. In this case 6 persons acoi ics-were arrested, of whom 4.were convicted. The particulars of this case have not been reported by the District Superintendent of Police. 90. The accused concerned in the Menshi dacoity case, who were awaiting trial at the close of 1874, are stated to have been released lay the Magistrate for want of sufficient evidence on which to commit them to the Sessions, the Magistrate expressing at the same time the opinion that he had little doubt about the guilt of the accus...
