In 1847 she lived for some time with a relative near Liverpool, and went from thence for a few mouths to reside with a person in Birmingham; and to the end of her life she retained a lively sense of the notice taken of her by Friends, and their kindness to an entire stranger. She afterwards lived in a family of Friends at Reading; and it was whilst here, as she subsequently told her mother, that she really first felt conviction for sin, and that her heart became thoroughly changed. The following memorandum, written in pencil, and bearing the date of her birth-day, was made during her residence here, and was found in her work-box after her decease: --"28th of 6th Month, 1850.--To day I have begun the Bible; and oh, that 1 may read it to profit through the Divine blessing O my heavenly Father, grant me a little of thy Holy Spirit to understand the words of life, and let me not be seeking to dive into things too high for me, but to keep low and humble before thee." She was allowed to attend part of the Yearly Meeting in London, which she much enjoyed, and often spoke of with pleasure. She returned home from Reading in 9th Month, 1850. From this period to the end of her life she continued to reside with her mother. A marked change was observed in her deportment; she seemed so cheerful and happy, yet at the same time serious; and " I noticed," says her mother, "some little things left off in her dress which she used to indulge in, and which she afterwards told me she did not feel easy at wearing." She never appeared to care much for dress, but preferred to be plain, simple, and...
