We have read it with pleasure and interest It is not only discourteous, but grossly unjust, to charge religionists of any kind with holding dogmas which they repudiate. We must say, however, that our respected friend and brother has not satisfied us that the term consubstantiation doox not aptly express the Lutheran position touching the Lord's supper. What does this term strictly import which was not advocated by Luther? After all, we have been long of the opinion, that there is in reality far less disagreement among Protestant divines on this subject, than the numerous and heated controversies it has occasioned would seem to indicate. There is, in our opinion, not only between the bread and wine and the body and blood of Christ, the relation between an outward sign and the thing; signified, but there is a sacramental union between these two, --a union founded upon the nature of the ordinanoo itself as set forth in the words of the institution, --suoh a union as to justify us in applying to the bread and wine the terms body and blood of Christ, and such a union that, in so far as it is competent for faith to do so, we may be said, in receiving the bread and wine, to eat a whole Christ, --a Christ consisting of a true body and reasonable soul in union with the divine nature as existing in the person of the Son of God.
