But if the work is a worthy one, if the service to mankind is one that justifies the consecration of a life, there must be a consciousness during the occupation of some larger and nobler end, and it is that consciousness which lifts mind and character out of the common rut of life and makes it worth while to live and to work. No war that was ever fought could accomplish the good which life insurance effects day by day. It has grown so fast that it has become, within the memory of many of us that are here, one of the great forces of modern society. You remember it when it was in its infancy, when the insured life was a rare exception among men. But now it is becoming universal, and is showing something of the capacity which lies in its idea. In short, it is an element of civilization of which we can almost foresee that it will accomplish a revolution, in many respects, in the organization of society itself. The following paragraph comes from the Insurance Herald of Louisville, but its truth is not guaranteed: We are authoritatively informed that, notwithstanding statements to the contrary, the Mutual Life of New York will not put out a cash value or any other new policy during the present year at least.
