The dimensions of the plate are 6 feet 4 inches long, 3 feet 8 inches wide, and one-eighth of an inch thick; and the design is from a celebrated drawing by a Chinese artist of the Sung Dynasty, now in the Imperial Museum of Japan. The tool which the artist uses is a chisel, about 3J inches in length, with a half-inch edge, and thickness of about three-quarters of an inch. The result is characteristic of the forceful refinement of the Japanese artist, who, whether he be interpreting his ideas in colour or in form, gains the utmost possible effect from the nuances of circles in Japan itself and, on behalf of that wonderful nation, amongst the critics of the Western world. It will be well worth the time of all who visit St. Louis to examine the pictures of Hokkai, and study the question as illustrated in his work. Another interesting feature of the Takata exhibit are the pictures by Gejow Masao (art name "Kcikoku"), who has two sets of six-leaved screens, painted in the characteristic style of the Shijo Academy, hanging side by side with his American landscapes.
