Representatives from many nations have been gathered into this Church; but no matter from whence they come, all have a common testimony and experience. They see principle and duty too with a single eye. This is the statement, and the marvelous and notorious unanimity with which the Saints vote to sustain their ecclesiastical officers, for instance, affords the proof. On many occasions thousands of hands are raised affirmatively, while there is not a single negative vote cast, although dissentients, if there be any, are invariably invited to vote as they please; and could there Le 100,000 of the " Mormon" people assembled, they would still vote as a unit. Were "Mormonism" possessed of no other distinguishing characteristic but this one of having power to unite a discordant and diversified humanity together, it would be truly marvelous. There is nothing else in this world that does or can accomplish such a work. Democracy or Republicanism in America can not do it. Liberalism or Conservatism in this country can not do it. Sectarianism can not do it. Nothing can but " Mormonism," and thus it becomes like a city set upon a hill--an index of God that points the way to universal brotherhood and goodwill.
