It is used entirely for effect, to rivet the chains of their deluded victims The entire argument of their champion, Dr. Milner, of England, is this: "If the Church was holy Once, she is holy Still: because the Church never changes her doctrines, nor suffers any one in her to change them.' In this sophism, he takes the word "Church" in one sense: namely, to be the Church of Gcd: in the rest of his sentence, he takes it for granted, without any proof, that the Romish Church is the only Church--and hence he infers that the Romish sect is the only and entire Church of God; and, thence, that the Romish sect is the Church in heaven, and the Church on earth '--and from this unparallelled impudence of assumption he tries to compose his muscles into sufficient gravity, so as to infer that the Romish Church is holy Now this is the puerility sophistry pervading the one famous sermon of Vicar General Dr. Power, which he preaches always, and over all the world. He first sets about proving that "God's Church is holy,"--and then gravely concludes with a pompous bravado, that "the Holy Mother of Rome" is, all the world over, pure and holy It never has entered into his brains to prove that the Church of Rome is the Church of God, and thence must be holy. His fatal logic leaves out, entirely, the connecting premise On this principle, and mode of argument, the Jews have infinitely the advantage of him. "We the Jews once were holy, as no believer in the Old Testament can deny."
