While, as subsequent developments have proven, Nourse got out of his class work all there was, he was a prime mover in almost every other forot of college activity. Four years straight he played on the football squad. Four years straight he fought opposite Garth Parker and Tom McFadden for an end position on the varsity. That he didn't make the team didn't worry him--the main idea was to help build winning varsity teams, and if he wasn't the very best man, Nourse was willing to stick and help the fellow that was. All will agree that Garth Parker and Tom McFadden were tough ones to beat. While he was not busy studying law or playing football in the autumn, Nourse was taking a few turns around the old oval back of Encina Hall in the spring. And he also managed to find time to work on the Daily Palo Alto and win the editorship in a rattling good Encina-versus-Roble ballot battle with Miss Helen Swett, who was the first woman ever to seek the college editorship. Every editor of the D. P. A. will say that the editorship is the greatest prize of the undergraduate life, but it takes a whole lot of work. In his post-graduate year Nourse was Manager of Student Affairs, which corresponds to our present graduate manager. Remember, all the things that we have told you Nourse was doing, and now let us add that all the while he was also earning his own way through college. The many and various ways in which he did it we do not at this minute recall, but even the summer vacations saw no respite from work for him; every summer found him in a lumber camp earning the dollars that were to help through ...
