Many who formerly thought temperance societies a visionary project, speak favourably of them, and a number of bon vivants, some of whom were in the constant practice of ridiculing all connected with these societies, have been greatly mortified by the secession of two of their companions who have joined the Society. There are now upon our list 69 names, and we have a good prospect of increase. T. T. Garvagh, 29th August, 1832. "Yesterday evening, according to an announcement made by the Rev. J. B. Rentoul, Seceding Presbyterian Minister, the Second Public Meeting of the Garvagh Temperance Society was held in his Meeting-house. Though the day was inclement, a very considerable number of persons attended, and took the deepest interest in the proceedings. The good cause is rapidly gaining ground in this part of the country, and has at present many zealous and enlightened advocates. The meeting was addressed by the Rev. Messrs. Wilson, Rentoul, and Fullarton. These gentlemen set forward the claims of temperance societies in a luminous and convincing manner, and exposed the futility of the objections with which the cause is usually assailed. The effect Was such as to exceed the most sanguine expectations of those who rejoice in the progress of temperance reform. At the close of the proceedings. 53 mdviduals voluntarily came forward; and enrolled their names. We hail this as an auspicious omen. We have held only two meetin...
