Keeping In close touch with other organizations, both governmental and private, which are studying the natural resources of the country, the Survey acts to a certain extent as a clearing house for all such information, and if its own records lack the desired data, it can frequently suggest the source from which they may be obtained. Reclamation Service.--This Service, which is primarily a construction bureau, was organized for the specific purpose of reclaiming arid public lands. Its work was made possible by the earlier investigations of the water resources branch of the Geological Survey, and its projects have generally been based on water-supply data collected by that bureau. Its own investigations are necessarily restricted to those factors which relate to particular projects under investigation or construction. Nevertheless, the Service has collected a large amount of valuable data covering all phases of investigation, construction, and operation of irrigation development, including power as a necessary part or as a by-product thereof. These valuable data should not be overlooked by those who are interested in projects in the arid land states. The maps and detailed surveys made by the Reclamation Service cover large areas, and its designs of systems and structures exhibit the best practice in many types of engineering construction.
