Excerpt: Stephen Venner, DL (born 1944) is the present Bishop to the Forces. Previous to this appointment he was the Bishop of Dover (and thus 'bishop in Canterbury') in the Church of England. He was also appointed the Archbishop of Canterbury's "Episcopal Commissary for the Falkland Islands" or "Bishop for the Falkland Islands" on 16 January 2007. Dr Venner read English at the University of Birmingham, who recently awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Divinity. He then read Theology at St Stephen's House, Oxford and Linacre College, Oxford (since St Stephen's House did not at the time have the status of a Permanent Private Hall), before spending 26 years as a parish priest across various dioceses in Southwark and Salisbury. He was consecrated as Bishop of Middleton in 1994 before being named Bishop of Dover in 1999. As Bishop of Dover, Rt Rev Dr Venner is also, in practice, the Diocesan Bishop for Canterbury, acting on behalf of the Archbishop of Canterbury.Bishop Venner, a qualified teacher, is the Pro-Chancellor of Canterbury Christ Church University. In an interview published on 14 December 2009 in The Daily Telegraph, the Rt Rev Dr Venner was quoted as saying some of the methods of combat used by the Taliban in Afghanistan (potentially including those to kill British troops) are not honourable or acceptable.
