Jairam Ramesh is the son of Late Prof. C.K. Ramesh, former Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay and Shrimati Sridevi Rameshat, daughter of former IAS officer K.V. Ramanathan. He was born on 9 April 1954 at his grandfathers coffee plantation in Chikmagalur, adjacent to Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and Project Tiger Reserve in Karnataka.
