It is the only vehicle designed and manufactured in New Zealand to have entered commercial production for an extended period. It should not be confused with the Renault Kangoo Trekka 4x4, the Kangoo having been marketed by Renault since 1997. The Trekka was produced initially by Motor Lines Ltd and then Motor Holdings Ltd. About 2,500 were built and some were exported to Australia and Indonesia. It utilised the koda Octavia powertrain, which was imported from the then-communist Czechoslovakia . It superficially resembled a Land Rover but with far more limited off-road capability and was produced in both van and ute formats. The Octavia engine and gearbox, originally intended for a rear-engined / rear wheel drive vehicle were placed at the front and drove the rear wheels, which were independently suspended with swinging half-axles. The gear linkages were reversed from the standard pattern, which took some getting used to (4th gear being where 1st should be and vice versa). The bodies were made of steel and were fitted with fibreglass canopies. The Trekka has become something of a New Zealand icon representing the "Kiwi can-do" attitude of the 1960s.
