Excerpt: Kirsten Cameron, born 1973 in Masterton, is a former New Zealand Distance freestyle and open water swimmer and a world record holder in Masters swimming in the 30-34, and 35-39 age groups. She was the 2009 national champion for women's 10 km open-water swim. Kirsten started competitive swimming in 2004. Due to the World Masters Records debacle at the Asia Pacific Out Games in 2011 and subsequent lack of support from NZ Masters, Kirsten no longer swims for NZ Masters and is now a member of Australian Masters. It is unlikely she will compete at a FINA World Masters event again. NOTE: May 2011 - FINA at this stage are refusing to ratify the following swims as they do not recognise the Out Games as a sanctioned meet, despite it being sanctioned by NZ Masters (A FINA Member) and run by Swim Wellington (A FINA Member).http: //www.gaynz.com/articles/publish/2/article_10443.php. In addition to this, NZ Masters are not giving Kirsten any support in her battle against FINA despite their key role in the sanctioning of the Out Games. Malcolm Eadie Champion (12 November 1883 - 27 July 1939) was New Zealand's first Olympic gold medallist, and the first swimmer to represent New Zealand at an Olympic Games. He won a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden as part of a combined team with Australia, competing as Australasia. Champion was born in 1883 in Auckland and taken to Norfolk Island (now an Australian territory but then a British colony), at a young age. His mother, Sarah Clara Quintal, descended from the Bounty mutineer Matthew Quintal. His father Captain William Nhill Champion was a sea captain who traded around the Pacific. Malcolm later worked on his father's ships and by the end of the 19th century was living in Auckland. Between 1901 and 1914, Champion won thirty-two New Zealand national titles, at one point holding the titles for every distance between 220 yards (200 m) and one mile (1.6 km).
