Excerpt: Dr. Mary Sue Coleman (born October 2, 1943) is the 13th President of the University of Michigan. She previously served as the 18th President of the University of Iowa from 1995 to 2002. Mary Coleman earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Grinnell College and her doctorate in biochemistry from the University of North Carolina. For 19 years she was a member of the biochemistry faculty at the University of Kentucky. As a biochemist, Dr. Coleman does research in the immune system and malignancies. In 1997, Coleman was elected to the Institute of Medicine. She co-chaired a major policy study of the Institute of Medicine, examining the consequences of uninsurance, and has become a nationally recognized expert on the issue. Her work in the sciences led to administrative appointments at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of New Mexico, where she served as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Coleman served as President of the University of Iowa from 1995 to 2002, when she was also professor of biochemistry in Iowa's College of Medicine and professor of biological sciences in the College of Liberal Arts. In 2002, she became the 13th President of the University of Michigan and its first female president. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education's annual survey on executive compensation in public universities, Coleman is the fifth-highest paid university president of public universities in the nation.
