Excerpt: Wales, New York - The first known settlers arrived around 1806. The town was formed in 1818 from the (now defunct) town of Willink. The Bleak House (named after the Dickens novel) is perhaps the oldest (begun in 1801) and most beautiful gothic revival cottage in Wales. It is noted for its hand carved gingerbreading and peaks. The initial construction was, of what is now the Eastern(porch)wing, built by Jacob Turner and his daughter while he was in the employ of the Willink Land Company as a sales agent. In 1811, John Carpenter an immigrant from England came into possession of the property, modified the one room cabin and added the main body of the house. The Carpenter family are buried in Carpenter Pioneer Cemetery on the property. Susan Harriet Carpenter, the daughter of the house whose passing was sudden and mysterious, is buried with her piano and horse as well. She occasionally treated visitors to a concert on foggy nights. The second family to own the house were two generations of the Gail family. They raised State Fair winning cows who produced more butter than any others at the time, as well as hunting dogs and turkeys. Famous "Elsie" the American Milk industry "spokescow" was born and buried lovingly on the premises The Miller family took over the house after the Gails all died out, and owned it during the filming of the original Tuck Everlasting. It is currently owned and operated by the Altair family. Originally a farming community, the town of Wales is documented through profiles of its churches, civic organizations, businesses, and individual citizens.
