It was founded in 1924 as Federacion Universitaria by students of the National University of San Marcos but was forced to rename in 1931. Since 1928, the club has always played in the top tier of Peruvian football, the top division of Peru (Torneo Descentralizado). Since 2000, its home games are played at the Estadio Monumental, the largest in Peru. Universitario and Alianza Lima are involved in a derby called the Peruvian Superclasico, which started in 1928. It has other minor rivalries with Sporting Cristal, Deportivo Municipal and Sport Boys of Callao. Universitario has won twenty-five first division titles, more than any other club in Peru, and was the first Peruvian club to reach the final of the Copa Libertadores.
