Excerpt: The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) is the governing body of high school athletics and activities in the state of Washington. The WIAA oversees the following activities: WIAA places member schools into one of six tiered classifications based on enrollment: 1B, 2B, 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A. A 1B school has fewer than 87 students, 2B between 88 and 187 students, 1A between 188 and 467 students, 2A between 468 and 918 students, 3A between 919 and 1280 students, and the largest schools, 4A, have 1281 or more students. However, some schools may choose to "opt up" to a larger classification than they would normally be assigned. Northwest District 1 encompasses the five counties in the northwest section of Washington State: Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, San Juan, and Bainbridge. The district includes six leagues with schools from all classification sizes. The Edmonds Homeschool Resource Center is included in this district as a 2B school but is independent of a league. The SeaKing District encompasses mostly schools in King County. The schools are in all classification sizes and separated into five leagues by size and location. A majority of the state's 3A schools are located in this district and the West Central District 3. The Center School, International Community School, International School, and Secondary BOC are independents in this District. The WCD encompasses schools in Clallum, Jefferson, Kitsap, Pierce, and King counties of the northern Peninsula and southern Puget Sound areas of Washington.
